Truth about Witchcraft and how to terminate it!

What is witchcraft?

The literal meaning of ‘Sihr’ in the Arabic language is anything the cause of which is hidden, and which appears in a form other than its real one, with the intention to distort the reality of things and deceive. 12] Ibn Qudama Al-Maqdisi said: “Sihr is a set of ‘uqad (knots), ruqa (incantations), and words uttered or written, or carried out in such a way as to affect the body of the subject (al-mashur), his heart or mind, without even coming into contact with him/her. The reality of sihr is that there are some types that can kill, cause one to fall ill, or act as an obstacle against a man having sexual intercourse with his wife. Other types can separate spouses, and can make them hate or love each other. [(المغني: 10/104، صارم البتار: ص. 13).] Emphasizing on the details of Sihr from the Quran and Sunnah, it is known that magic is true and there is evidence from the Quran and Sunnah that it has an effect. Moreover it is also known that Sihr is disbelief in Allah. Thus, Allah says in the Quran:

Translation: “They followed what the Shayatin (devils) gave out (falsely of the magic) in the lifetime of Sulaiman (Solomon). Sulaiman did not disbelieve, but the Shayatin (devils) disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels, Harut and Marut, but neither of these two (angels) taught anyone (such things) till they had said, ‘We are for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us).’ And from these (angels) people learn that by which they cause separation between man and his wife, but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah’s Leave. And they learn that which harms them and profits them not. And indeed they knew that the buyers of it (magic) would have no share in the Hereafter. And how bad indeed was that for which they sold their own selves, if they but knew.” (Al-Baqarah :102) It is evident from this verse that Sihr exists, and it effects the heart and body of people. A person can be bewitched only when Allah Wills. Emphasizing on the evidence from the Sunnah, Abu Hurayra (radiallahu a’nhu) reported: “The prophet (peace be upon him) said:

‘Avoid the seven serious sins.’ People asked, ‘What are they?’ The prophet (peace be upon him) replied, ‘Shirk (polytheism), Sihr (sorcery), unlawful killing of a person, living on money from usury, usurping an orphan’s wealth, retreat at the time of Jihad, and accusing innocent married women of fornication.’” On the basis of this hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned that Sihr must be avoided as it is one of the most serious sins, and this is proof enough that it exists. The prophet (Peace be upon him) said:

“He is not one of us who observes bird omens or has that done for him, who tells fortunes or has his fortune told, who does witchcraft or has witchcraft done for him. Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and believes what he says has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him).” (Al-Bazzaar with a Jayyid isnaad; Al-tabaraani). In this hadith the Prophet (peace be upon him) has forbidden to practice magic and to have witchcraft done for him.

Thus, sorcerers practice magic by cooperating with the Satan and receiving the Satan’s assistance. They commit illegal or polytheistic acts, in return for the Satan’s assistance and obedience in fulfilling the sorcerer’s request. An agreement is set up between a sorcerer and a demon, requiring that the former commit certain pagan rituals, whether secretly or openly, and the latter provide the services he needs or send someone to do the job such as burying the magic under the ground, reciting polytheistic incantations to water and pouring the water to places and giving people magic in the form of food so that the person consumes it. The greater the sorcerer’s degree of disbelief is, the more obedient the demon would be to him, and faster in executing his orders.

Signs by which a sorcerer may be recognized

There are many ways to recognize a sorcerer. Some of the main features are:
1. There are some sorcerers who trick the people by using the Quran to practice magic: this kind of sorcerers actions have to be examined carefully. For example, these sorcerers claim that they use the Quran to treat people. They make the patient touch his/her finger on a certain grid/table or names of people followed by the recitation of the translation of Quranic verses (verses which describe loss and destruction). After that the sorcerer speaks in a frightening way to an extent where the patient is petrified to the core. The sorcerer’s speech is based to a level where the patient cannot be treated without the help of this sorcerer. In the sorcerer’s speech he claims that he knows the unseen by saying things such as, this will not happen to you, you are lost, so now you have to bring this and that and bury it in a certain graveyard and do that. Or the sorcerer have to write on a certain part of the patient’s body and do this and that, you can’t do this without paying a certain amount of money, by saying such words the sorcerer depresses and tricks the patient into believing him. Afterwards the sorcerer recites some Quranic verses mixed with satanic chanting. For instance, there is a very popular polytheistic chanting used for Jinn purposes by the sorcerers named as “dhahurusee”. The sorcerer mix this “dhahurusee” with some verses of Surah Jinn from the Quran. By reciting such chanting the Satan cooperates with the sorcerer. If a person acts in such a way or treats people in such a way then he/she is surely, a sorcerer.
2. The sorcerer asks the patient his and his mother’s names: There will be no soothsaying or engaging in polytheistic acts if the person treats using permissible Ruqya or uses Quran and Sunnah for treating in a permissible way. Nor will the sorcerer need the patient and his mother’s and father’s full names. However, sorcerers practice soothsaying. The basis of their work depends on the result of soothsaying, omens and palm reading. Such as asking the patient’s and his mother’s name and practice “abujadhu” (separation of the alphabets of the given names by changing it to numerical digits) by addition, multiplication, division and subtraction. After that the sorcerer relies on the remainder and checks the soothsaying book for this digit and reveals to the patient what is written below that digit in the book by combining the patient’s story to what was written under that digit. This is one way of doing this. The other way of soothsaying is by the assistance of Satan. For soothsaying this way, the sorcerer does a certain type of Mathematics and chant in a certain way; so the Satan gathers information about the patient’s tragedy and mix it with deceitful lies and polytheistic talks by saying what will happen to the patient and hurling the patient into shirk (polytheism). Or, by palm reading the sorcerer fantasizes and tells stories of what will happen to the patient. If the person does such things, then he/she is indisputably a sorcerer.
3. He (the sorcerer) asks for a bird or an animal to be slaughtered: Fortunately, people who practice this are very few in the Maldives. These people ask the patient to slaughter an animal or a bird. Sometimes they ask to slaughter a red hen and take its blood. Sometimes they even keep a red hen on the patients head and kill the hen while chanting. They slaughter these things by sacrificing it to the Iblees (Satan) or a Jinn which cooperates with this sorcerer. If the person asks for the blood of a bird or an animal, or if the person asks to slaughter a bird or an animal, then he/she is undoubtedly a sorcerer.
4. He instructs the patient to isolate himself/herself and remain indoors for a specific period of time: This is very commonly practiced by sorcerers. He instructs the patient to remain indoors without having a bath for 40 days. Most of the time he instructs the patient to do this after giving the patient an amulet to use within this period or something similar to it. Sometimes the sorcerer writes on an egg for a certain period of time and until the patient consumes the egg, he/she must remain indoors for a certain amount of time. The reason is so that the Jinn can assist and look after the patient. However, in some situations, an exorcist (who practices permissible exorcism) might also instruct the patient to stay indoors if the patient becomes unconscious often, if the patient suffers convulsions or if it’s harmful for the patient to go out until these difficulties are solved. Other than this, if the person instructs to do as said before, then he/she is indeed a sorcerer. The sorcerer is doing it with the help of the Satan and it is pure disbelief.
5. Sticking grids on places, making the patient bury things and writing on animal skin and hanging it on places: writing numbers or alphabets or words in squares and grids and giving it to the patient as an amulet, hanging it in shops, houses or to use it in another way. Sorcerers write on lead sheet (thimara faiy), deer hide (fullaa dhuli) and copper sheet (loafothi/loafai) and make amulets with it and give it to patients. Sorcerers instruct the patient to bury these amulets or hang them in places. Moreover, the sorcerers put the amulet in a bottle filled with mercury or its like and give it to people. If a person’s action is in such a way, then do not doubt that he/she is a sorcerer.
6. He recites unclear incantations: As mentioned earlier, some sorcerers chant using names of Jinn. They do this near sick people and for other reasons as well. They murmur unclear words. For example, chanting known as “dhahurusee ismu”, “maruhaalu” and “marujaanaa”.
7. He writes broken Arabic letters on a piece of paper or something similar: It is strong evidence that the person, when he writes on plate or makes amulets, he breaks Quranic words to alphabets and use it with names of Devils, is a sorcerer. For example, breaking the alphabets of Allah’s name separately and writing behind it the names of Devils and engaging in Shirk (Polytheism).
8. He asks for a piece of cloth from the patient’s garment: Sorcerers ask for the patient’s parents’ name, taking a piece of the patients garment, nails, hair or something similar to this. The reason for taking a piece of garment, nail or hair is that, it will be easier for the devil to reach the person and continue with its work. Usually, this is practiced when magic is done to harm someone. For example, when practicing Sihr of separation, Sihr of love, killing people by using magic and to do other harm to people.
9. Practicing magic of separation, magic of love and “Ajidhakurun”: In Dhivehi, magic of love is called “Isthiri”, and magic of separation is called “Vari tholhi”. This is a calamity very common to the Maldivians. Most of the time, magic is done for these purposes. In addition to that, many people who go to these sorcerers are the youth. Most of them go to sorcerers to do magic because his girlfriend broke up with her and he wants her back, someone else “stole” his girlfriend so he wants to separate them or he wants a certain girl to fall in love with him. Moreover, if the husband is having an affair with another woman or if he wants a second marriage, the wife seeks the help of the sorcerer to separate them. “Ajidha kurun” is occasionally seen in the Maldives. It is a satanic nude ritual practiced by some sorcerers. They dance and chant naked in the sea towards the setting of the sun or when the sun rises by prostrating and worshiping the Satan; this is called “Ajidha kurun”. They practice this ritual in order to cooperate and communicate directly with the Satan without an intercessor by making agreements thus receiving the Satan’s assistance for engaging in sorcery. If a person does any such thing, then he/she is indisputably a sorcerer.
10. Beautifying falsehood and showing the truth as falsehood
11. He gives the patient some pieces of paper to burn and use as an incense.
12. Communicating with invisible beings by asking for help in front of the patient.
Be conscious that it is a major sin to go to sorcerers knowingly after witnessing the above signs.
Ibn Qudama (rahimahullah) reported: “That learning or teaching sorcery is an unlawful act and it is an uncontroversial issue among scholars as far as we know. The Hambalists hold that a person becomes an unbeliever if he learns to practice sorcery, whether he believes in sorcery lawful or unlawful. As Allah says in the Quran:

((وَاتَّبَعُوا مَا تَتْلُو الشَّيَاطِينُ عَلَى مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَانَ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَكِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ كَفَرُوا))

From here

To here

Meaning, Sulaiman did not disbelieve because of sorcery. Moreover, they (Harut and Marut) said:

((إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلا تَكْفُرْ))

Meaning, do not disbelieve by learning sorcery.”[5 المغني: 10/106، صارم البتار: ص. 50.]Ibn Hajar (Rahimahullah) reported: “From these words of Allah,

it defines that learning sorcery is disbelief itself.” Belief of the mu’min who submits himself to Allah is that sorcery exists and that it has an effect on things. However, one should also believe that, sorcery is under the Will and Power of Allah and it can neither harm nor profit anyone except by the Will of Allah.

Belief of the mu’min who submits himself to Allah is that sorcery exists and that it has an effect on things. However, one should also believe that, sorcery is under the Will and Power of Allah and it can neither harm nor profit anyone except by the Will of Allah.
The more we Muslims strengthen our Iman (Faith in Allah), Aqeeda (belief in Allah) and increase our Taqwa (Fear of Allah), the more the Satan fears that person. And the more we are unconscious of Allah and far from Islam, the closer we are to the Satan along with sorcery and being bewitched. If we recite the daily prayers and supplications for protection and obey Allah and His commandments, Allah will protect us from sorcery and all other evil, by the Will of Allah. The translation of the Words of Allah in verse 3 of Surah Talaaq He says “…And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him…”
He is Allah, the Lord of the Worlds Who we have to fear, supplicate and ask for help. We must believe that without the Will of Allah no one can gain harm or profit. Moreover, we must believe that if we obey His commandments, He will relieve us out of every difficulty.
On the other hand, if we fear sorcerers and the Satan and his allies, then they will frighten and harm us.

Punishment under Islamic Law for practicing sorcery

Discussing about different types of murders, scholars say that if anyone murders a person by using magic, then his punishment is death penalty because he murdered someone.
Ibn Qudama states in Al-Muqhnee (330/9) “If a sorcerer kills someone, his punishment will be death penalty. For the reason that he killed someone by using a weapon which kills people. It is equal to killing someone by using a knife. If a person murders someone by using weapons which kills a person, then his punishment will be death penalty. However, if the weapon used to murder the person was not a weapon used for killing people, yet the person is murdered with such a weapon, then the murderer has to give blood money. There will be no death penalty for that person since the murderer’s intention was to harm someone.” There are contradictions in this matter.
It is stated in Al-Mausooatul Fiqhiyya (24/267) regarding the sorcerer’s punishment under Islamic Law that majority of the scholars agree that if a sorcerer used magic which has claimed a life, then the sorcerer’s punishment is death penalty. According to Maaliki Madhhab, there must be evidence for that. Ash-Shafi’I claims that the punishment must be death penalty. However, if the sorcerer admits that he used magic to kill a person, or if two sorcerers who used to practice sorcery before (but has now repented) proves that a certain magic will kill a person, then the sorcerer who used magic to kill the person will be proven guilty for taking a person’s life. On the contrary, if the magic used by the sorcerer was not to kill a person, then it is closer to bloodshed. And Allah The Exalted knows best.
In addition to that, the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said regarding the punishment of the sorcerer:

(حد الساحر ضربة بالسيف)

“The punishment for the magician is that he be struck (i.e. beheaded) by the sword.”

Protection against sorcery:
The only thing we have to do to protect ourselves from sorcery is to obey Allah completely. There are many things we must give special attention to protect ourselves from sorcery. They are:
1. Being sincere to Allah, worshiping only Him and refraining from polytheistic acts (Shirk).
2. Obeying Allah in every situation and abstaining from sins. Hence it is important to pray 5 daily prayers on time.
3. Reciting the supplications and prayers from the Quran and Sunnah. Thus it is important to recite the morning and evening dhikr (supplication), dua before going to bed, dua while entering and exiting the toilet and dua while entering and exiting the house.
4. Reciting Quran. It is very important that one recites surah Al-Baqarah to protect oneself and one’s home from the evil of Satan.
5. Cleansing one’s home from things which Allah has forbidden like musical instruments and animated pictures or portraits.
6. Keeping children indoors for approximately an hour after the sun sets. Because the devils come out at this time.

For the termination of magic:

There are things one can do to terminate the magic or to save oneself from magic. There are also permissible things to do. The most important points are:
1. Ask Allah to save oneself from magic often. Even the prophet (peace be upon him) also supplicated several times when he was bewitched.
2. Terminate the magic if the location of the magic is known.
3. Cupping (Hijama). It is very helpful to do cupping on the bewitched organ. When the prophet (peace be upon him) was bewitched, he did cupping on the middle of his head.
4. Increase in ishtighfar (seeking forgiveness from Allah), praying, supplicating and reciting the Quran.
5. Practicing Ruqya. Treating sorcery by using Quran.
6. Consuming 7 Ajwa dates daily on an empty stomach.
7. Drinking Zamzam water and supplicating.

Some Ruqya for terminating magic

There are various Ruqya we can practice in order to terminate magic. And to do this, we can use any Quranic verse without the use of polytheism (Shirk) in it. Thus, the verses which are experienced and the verses which have the most effect on the patient for magic can be also used.
1. Here we will point out the 2 chapters of the Quran which were revealed to the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for the termination of the magic when he was bewitched. They are Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-naas. The bewitched person should often recite these 2 surahs and also Ayatul Kursi and Surah Al-Fatihah. Such as reciting on water and drinking it or by bathing in it. Also by reciting it, blowing it on one’s hands and then passing them (hands) over one’s face and body. This is an easy Ruqya to practice if the patient is able to do it. Moreover it is better to practice Ruqya on your own. It is not an issue if the person who is unable to practice Ruqya to get help from a person who has knowledge and experience in permissible exorcism.
2. The bewitched person should recite Surah Al-Baqarah often. The prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited, the devil will not enter that house. Moreover, when Surah Al-Baqarah is being recited, it is noticed and experienced that it irritates the devil. Thus, reciting Surah Al-Baqarah often benefits the bewitched person, the person who is being disturbed by the Jinn and the person suffering from evil eye.
3. Read the morning and evening supplications and prayers daily. And read those supplications often. Consequently it will be easier and quicker to treat and protect oneself from sorcery, disturbance from devils and the evil eye.
4. Following is a very beneficial treatment prescribed by scholars for bewitched people and people with difficulty in having sexual relation with their spouse. This an experienced and successful treatment used several times for many who were bewitched.
Firstly, crush or grind seven (7), clean and raw (green) Lote leaves (Kunnaaru Faiy) with 2 stones or something similar and add it to water which is sufficient for a bath.
Recite أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم and after that recite the following chapters and verses.

  1. Ayatul Kursiy:

(Surah Al-Ikhlaas)

(Surah Al-Falaq)

(Surah An-Naas)

After reciting these verses to the mixture of water and Lote leaves, drink the water three (3) times bath in the remaining water. If needed extra, this can be done more than once or twice.
